"George W. Bush doesn't have to be concerned with any more elections that carry his name on the ballot. But that doesn't mean he isn't intensely interested in the 2008 presidential race, a contest that is almost certain to be seen as a final referendum on his two terms in the White House.I hate to potentially sour people like Sharon Cobb with this tidbit, but for those of us who don't think Dubya is the Fount of Evil in the modern world, his view of the 2008 GOP field is intriguing.
So Bush, we are told, has taken to assessing the field of Republican candidates. He has been known to tell contemporaries that Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the leading GOP candidate of the moment, might not make it. But instead of going down the list of others, such as former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the president reportedly says it might pay to watch a candidate who is receiving essentially zero attention: Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas."

Of all the Republican candidates, Huckabee most reminds me of Bush 2000. "Compassionate Conservatism" and what not.
But I wonder how much of Bush's fascination has to do with policy, and how much it has to do with Physical fitness, which is something Bush cares quite a bit about. I think he even asked John Roberts about his workout routine before selecting him.
You're probably right . . . I think Brownback is very similar to Huckabee policy-wise with perhaps less "upbeatness."
The point about fitness is interesting; I view it as more of a conversation piece--a common interest.
"I view it as more of a conversation piece--a common interest." I hope that is true, but I have trouble picturing Bush involved in deep discussions on policy or philosophy. I'm sure he does, but I just can't picture it in my head.
I understand what you mean . . . I think Bush is very demanding, willing to delegate and prone to "decide" not deliberate in front of others. He is the decider, after all.
I think anyone who knows him acknowledges that he is intelligent, he's just inarticulate. That's how it seems to me. But my point was I don't think fitness is why he "likes"/admires/is watching Huckabee.
