NY Times "investigating" adoption records of John Roberts' children?!?

This really bothers me . . . the N.Y. Times is investigating the adoption records of SCOTUS nominee John Roberts' two children. What exactly is the relevance? What is the basis for the investigation? Sorry, but I can't think of a single reasonable basis for doing such an investigation . . .
